Until recently, when a child or teen developed diabetes, it was typically Type 1, also called juvenile diabetes. With Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not make insulin, which leaves too much sugar in the blood.

With America’s increasing obesity epidemic, children and teens are developing Type 2 diabetes, often called adult-onset diabetes. With Type 2 diabetes, the body does not make or use insulin well. Why are children and teens developing Type 2 diabetes? There are several reasons:

  • Obesity
  • Inactivity
  • Poor diet
  • Family history of diabetes

Developing either type of diabetes poses a serious health risk for children. If not controlled, diabetes can lead to hypertension and stroke, heart disease, kidney and vision problems, circulatory problems, and in extreme cases, even death. Parents, working in conjunction with their family doctor, must make a concerted to manage their child’s diabetes through lifestyle changes, medication or a combination of the two.

But getting a child or teen to eat healthy food can be problematic, particularly those used to sweet treats, soda, fast foods and processed foods. The most effective strategy often involves changing the entire family’s diet so that children don’t feel singled out. Still, it’s a challenge as kids and teens with diabetes often must forgo favorite foods.

When we created Thrive Ice Cream, we did so with the vision of developing a nutritious version of America’s favorite dessert, premium ice cream. After years in development, we succeeded in perfecting our recipe for nutritious Thrive Ice Cream that contains 24 vitamins and minerals, active probiotics, protein and fiber, and natural sweeteners and flavors. Not content, we also developed No Sugar Added versions of our Simply Chocolate, Creamy Vanilla, Buttered Pecan, and Salted Caramel that contain just three grams of sugar!
